What is the Farm Business Strategic Review?

Rural Business Support developed the Farm Business Strategic Review to help family businesses identify and adopt proven practices in business and production to improve profitability and productivity.

The program has run successfully for the past two years in the dairy and pork industries, assisting more than 60 family businesses across South Australia.

The Grains Industry Farm Business Strategic Review is the result of a partnership between Rural Business Support (RBS), Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA), Grain Producers SA (GPSA) and the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

How could the program benefit my family’s farm business?

The Farm Business Strategic Review has been proven to help family farm businesses be better equipped to grow and create jobs.

The South Australian Government through PIRSA was pleased to support the pilot with 30 dairy industry families, which saw an independent cost benefit report confirm $3.65 million in new investment as a direct result of their involvement in program.

How much of a time commitment does the program require?

The decision-makers in your family business participate in four half-day sessions.

The first session is a strategic briefing using new strategic analysis tools to quickly understand the fundamentals of strategy, markets, finance, investment and bank negotiations. These workshops will be held at central venues in March 2018 in three regions – Eyre Peninsula, Mid North/Yorke Peninsula and the Mallee/South East.

This is followed by three meetings at your farm with a Farm Business Analyst, who helps your family to develop a Strategic Action Plan.

Is there a cost for my family to participate?

Participating families will each contribute $500.

The delivery of the Grains Industry Farm Business Strategic Review is the result of a $200,000 commitment through PIRSA, building on a $300,000 commitment to develop the program in dairy in 2015 and 2016. The South Australian Government’s commitment will be matched by $100,000 from GPSA and $50,000 from GRDC.

What makes the program so successful?

New web database tools are used, which enable simplified data collection and powerful data analysis linked to industry benchmarks.

A Farm Business Analyst then works with your family – at your farm – to collect and enter the key physical and financial information. This allows your family to compare your farm’s performance with industry benchmarks and identify opportunities.

The process is secure, private and confidential.

What outcomes can my family expect from the program?

New web review tools are used to develop a Strategic Action Plan tailored to your family’s farm system and your family’s goals.

This plan includes a cost benefit analysis, with a five year annual budget and cash flow, as well as a 12 month budget and cash flow suitable for succession planning and bank or investment negotiations.
