Workshops to help small businesses to be prepared for natural disaster events

What impact would a bushfire, flood, or even a significant power outage have on the operations, employees and bottom line of your rural or regional business?

Rural Business Support’s Business Readiness Project will help 135 small rural and regional South Australian businesses be better prepared to withstand and survive natural disaster events. The project will see 27 free workshops delivered across SA between June 2018 and 2019, with participants also receiving a half hour telephone consultation after the workshops.

Using a new risk planning tool, the workshops will help you to:

  • Identify your critical business resources, infrastructure and plant/equipment.
  • Find out how your business would be impacted by several natural disaster scenarios.
  • Plan key actions that can be taken before, during and afterwards to reduce and/or avoid these risks altogether.
  • Develop your own Business Readiness Plan that can be saved, shared and regularly updated.

The Business Readiness Project project was supported by the top recommendation from the Independent Review of The Extreme Weather Event report of 2016 before the establishment of an education campaign to encourage businesses in South Australia to develop business continuity plans for disasters.

Through our delivery of the Rural Financial Counselling Service and our Business Advisory Service, Rural Business Support worked extensively with small rural businesses following the Sampson Flat and Pinery bushfires and 2016 Gawler River flood. Unfortunately these events resulted in business closures, reduced hours for employees and, for some, an extensive and costly period of recovery.

The Business Readiness Project is funded under the Natural Disaster Resilience Program by the South Australian Government and the Commonwealth Department of Home Affairs.
