Grains Industry Farm Business Strategic Review Strategic Briefings roll out across SA

The Grains Industry Farm Business Strategic Review has now rolled out across South Australia, with families from across the state taking part in Strategic Briefings. Families from the Eyre Peninsula, Mid North, Yorke Peninsula, Mallee and South East regions participated in the briefings which were held at Wudinna on Tuesday 6 March; Clare on Wednesday 7 March and Keith on Thursday 8 March.

A partnership between Rural Business Support (RBS), Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA), Grain Producers SA (GPSA) and the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), the program aims to help family grains businesses identify opportunities to improve productivity and profitabilty.

The program gives families access to $7500 worth of professional business training for a registration fee of just $500. Families involved will now take part in three one-on-one sessions with RBS farm business analysts to help them to develop a strategic action plan. The analysts help to collect and enter key physical and financial information, which allows families to compare their farm’s performance with industry benchmarks and identify opportunities.

The Grains Industry Farm Business Strategic Review is the result of a $200,000 commitment through PIRSA, building on a $300,000 commitment to develop the program in dairy in 2015 and 2016. The SA Government’s commitment is being supported by $100,000 from GPSA and $50,000 from GRDC.

Rural Business Support Chief Executive Officer Brett Smith said he was pleased with the great turnout of families who had signed up.

“We’re oversubscribed for the program and we’ve already had some exceptional feedback from participants who have attended the half-day briefings in their regions,” he said. “The focus of the briefings was on strategic thinking and the new tools that can be used on-farm to quickly develop a strategic action plan.

The Grains Industry Farm Business Strategic Review was created after the success of the Dairy and Pork Farm Business Strategic Review programs, to help family businesses better understand their strategic position, analyse their financial status and identify opportunities to improve productivity and profitability.

“All businesses need a strategic plan and farm businesses are no different,” Mr Smith said. “It will be an intensive four-day journey that families will take, but they will come out the other side with some great outcomes including a strategic plan for the future.

“We’ve had some really wonderful outcomes for families and businesses involved in the previous Farm Business Strategic Reviews and we expect very similar outcomes in this program.”
